This Solaris Blueprint will be of interest to anyone wishing to evaluate LDAP for use in their enterprise. The book focuses upon implementing the iPlanet Directory Services which come bundled with Solaris 8. If your main desire is to setup a working LDAP server using this software, this book is for you. Helpful chapters include setting up a secure server, integrating the Solaris native LDAP client with the iPlanet server, and some recommendations for server sizing and tuning. I was somewhat disappointed that the book did not go into greater depth about key issues, such as integrating with other LDAP-enabled products. Most of us have to deal with NT authentication, Exchange servers, and other heterogenous environments. This book only gives a single-product plug when discussing synchronization issues. If you're looking for non-product specific information, you'll need to keep looking elsewhere.

didnot covered in a great and good details. Schema management and creation is very short. does not cover authentication process and configuring clients, such as gateway services.

Best Iplanet Technical Reference Available - 2001-05-12

This book is by far the best Technical Reference for anyone running Iplanet LDAP directory services. This book contains information that the MFG should have included in the management documentation. At least 50% of the book is devoted to installation configuration and tuning of the Iplanet LDAP server. I wish this half had been written as an administrators guide years ago. The Solaris naming service piece is well written as well. Lots of examples for configuring from both the command line and the gui. A MUST HAVE for anyone running IPLANET LDAP

This is a brief overview of LDAP services for Solaris based on outdated versions of the directory servers. The biggest player on the market, Active Directory, is not really covered well, neither Sun MetaDirectory. It could be a starting point, but you can get almost the same info for free by spending a couple hours browsing Sun web site. This is a formal side, but there is also an informal one. Some books give you a feeling of the subject. You get some understanding and vision. This is not that kind of books. It looks like it was done but cutting and pasting from some other publications, lots of good pieces, but they don't really make up a completed puzzle.

Great reference book to look up how ldap work and its relation between other naming services. But not practical, especially when it used the old iPlanet directory server 4.11 version as example while the 5.0 is already out when the book is written. Overall its a good book.
