Taking good care of any musical instrument is essential to keep it in optimum playing condition. For brasswind and woodwind instruments this is especially true: cleanliness, periodic lubrication and regular maintenance can affect the sound and playability of your instrument. In this tutorial, Jeff Peterson shows you proper care and maintenance techniques that may ultimately prevent costly major repairs. Jeff covers tips on proper assembly and disassembly, emergency repairs to get you through your gig, routine maintenance (valve oils, greasing slides, etc.) and how to clean everything from the mouthpiece to the slides and tubing. This is an excellent tutorial for the novice player as well as the seasoned musician, educator and student. Brasswind and woodwind instruments covered in this tutorial include: trumpet, trombone, flute, saxophone and clarinet.

I watched some of the woodwind videos as these are the instruments I'm familiar with. The first couple videos for each instruments are extremely basic. If you have had a good teacher, most will have shown you these steps in the first lesson. If instruction has all been through a school program, you may pick up a few tips that will avoid damaging the instrument.
The DIY section is more useful for intermediate players. Most of the tips will be known by experienced players but I picked up a few tips that could be useful and I've been playing for about 30 years (as an amateur).
As long as the scope of this video is understood, it is useful. Just don't expect expert instruction on instrument repair.
