Clear, comprehensive and logical - 2002-01-05

This book suits my learning style perfectly. After only a few lessons I am able to combine information and apply it to individual projects.
Each lesson will assume that you haven't read the others and repeat certain instructions, such as how to reset preferences.
I like that comprehensiveness.
With other books I had to struggle through lengthy explanations of tools and functions, but with CIB's complete specific directions I can see how the tool works and experiment further.
Can't understand why so many people are trashing this book

Practical For Beginners - 2005-12-31

Im using Adobe Illustrator CS, but this book still applies the simple uses for things. I feel a lot of reviews for this book are low because people are looking for the impossible way to learn Illustrator; which is to jump in and do whatever they want.

You have to be patient with Illustrator, and creativity counts. This book really goes through simple practical steps to help you learn to use its functions.

A Downside that I didnt like is that this book does not mention HotKeys very much after each portion, which is a necessity for those of us who want things done quickly.

Overall I like this book, I purchased "Visual Quickstart Guide: Illustrator CS" which is pretty good as well, I would rate both of them a four. This book IS USEFULL for beginners, though it takes a day or two to get the feel of illustrator from this book - You will get it!

Not that easy to follow - 2002-01-25

Not a very easy book to follow. Also I did not a few mistakes in the book that made me pull my hair out.

Otherwise the information presented and the exercises were good with alot of hands on practice.

There was a problem with the CD-Rom as I opened the an illustration from lesson 00, Illustrator gave me a message that the AGaramond Bold is not installed on my system. I couldn't find that font on the CD-Rom, I am guessing Adobe would like it's customers to additionally buy the fonts from them as well.

If the book was written differently with the same lessons and objectives, it would be much more clearer to understand and a 4 hour job would easily be completed in 1 hour.

Don't expect to learn program in a weekend. - 2002-01-09

I liked the book and was excellent by itself. Illustrator is not a program or subject which can be learned in a weekend it takes time. This book walks you through the information step by step. It's frustrating at first if your a windows guy like me the set-up is so different in the Adobe environment.

What's neat is that the cd within book works on either MAC Apple or MS Windows operating systems for the tutorials. If you can take a class in conjunction with this book and your learning curve will greatly increase plus lowering your fustration. It took me approximently five to six weeks to get through the complete book of lessons, but it was well worth the time spent. I was naive at first, that I could use book and learn illustrator 9.0 in 24 hours, since I have already worked with many other drawing platforms such as Auto CAD 2000.

After learning the program I can draw like you would not believe its a very powerful graphic drawing program simialar to CAD. But is designed for the artist or illustrator instead of the engineer. I can design my own christmas cards, web illustrations, blueprints, and other professional drawings with ease.

As my title explains this is not a beginers book, but a "course book" of 15 lessons take your time and work through the lessons on your computer and you to will discover the benefit of illustrator 9.0 for yourself.

Sorry sorry sorry book - 2001-12-09

Adobe's books are generally poorly done, but this one takes the cake for sorry instructional books. It takes ambiguity to new hights. If you enjoy being lost... this book is for you! You should have a fair head of hair before starting this book for when it's over you will have pulled most of it out.

Adobe should be ashamed for publishing this book.
