Overview

Microsoft Word has grown considerably in power, sophistication and capability over the past decade, but one thing that hasn't changed since the early '90s is its user interface. The simple toolbar in version 2.0 has been packed with so many features since then that few users know where to find them all. Consequently, more and more people are looking for "insider" tips that will allow them to use these advanced and often hidden features. Microsoft has addressed this problem in Word 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even though you will be able to find advanced features, you might not know what to do with them.

Word 2007: The Missing Manual, written specifically for this version of the software, explains basics like how to create documents, enter and edit text, format, print, and fax. You will will also learn how to create sophisticated page layouts, insert forms and tables, use graphics, and create book-length documents with outlines and Master Documents. Coverage also includes how to share documents with other people and programs, create web pages, automate documents with fields, and automate tasks with macros and the Visual Basic scripting language. This book shows you how to do it all.

Horrible Book, 2009-06-14
Reviewer rating:
This book was so poorly written and so completely useless that I gave it away to Goodwill, and felt guilty for giving them such a horrible book.

I am a fan of David Pogue (the creator of the Missing Manuals series), and I love my MM Google book. However, the authors of that book are SMART, and can speak and write, and are expansive and creative in their writing, their examples and their indexing.

This book is the complete opposite. If I saw one more example using a Dickens book (how relevent!), I was going to puke.

I have used 3rd party manuals for 15+ years, and they were all really well written, organized and helpful. Again, this book is the complete opposite.

For my money and time and needs, even if this book was free, I would reject it.

I love this book. After being annoyed by lack of "Word" knowhow, this book answered all my questions and frustrations in an interesting, humorous way. I had checked out several from the library, but when it came to ordering, this was my first choice.

This Missing Manual is very helpful. It tells what to do in plain sensible language. I will use this book a lot.

There are more items in a program than the normal pathways such as Help files will lead you. This is an excellent reference source.
Word 2007 From O'Reilly Press, 2008-12-23
Reviewer rating:
Just like the book states, "The Missing Manual." This is the one book that should have shipped with the software. If you are new to Word 2007 and the layout changes, this is the book for you. If you're having any trouble using Word 2007, just don't sit there go and buy the book. You will not regret it, trust me.
