Microsoft Word has grown considerably in power, sophistication and capability over the past decade, but one thing that hasn't changed since the early '90s is its user interface. The simple toolbar in version 2.0 has been packed with so many features since then that few users know where to find them all. Consequently, more and more people are looking for "insider" tips that will allow them to use these advanced and often hidden features. Microsoft has addressed this problem in Word 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even though you will be able to find advanced features, you might not know what to do with them.
Word 2007: The Missing Manual, written specifically for this version of the software, explains basics like how to create documents, enter and edit text, format, print, and fax. You will will also learn how to create sophisticated page layouts, insert forms and tables, use graphics, and create book-length documents with outlines and Master Documents. Coverage also includes how to share documents with other people and programs, create web pages, automate documents with fields, and automate tasks with macros and the Visual Basic scripting language. This book shows you how to do it all.

Transitioning from the former version of WORD to the 2007 version would be, I thought, an easy process. Not so. Whoever designed this program did not seem to bother with any considerations of current WORD users. Thus, I bought this manual to help me accomplish the things I use WORD for. For instance, I wanted to know how to insert the current date in the document. Couldn't find anything resembling the old "insert" key, so I consulted the handy manual I had just purchased. It is not under "date" or "insert" in the index, nor can I find it anywhere in my perusal of the manual and likely spots where such information is likely to be. I was similarly out of luck with the former "autotext" function. In short, useless manual and, as far as I can see, useless update to WORD. Microsoft should employ a "users' advocate" and the Missing Manual people should employ authors with a talent for clear organizing, explanations and indexing skills. Phooey to the lot of them.

This book was so poorly written and so completely useless that I gave it away to Goodwill, and felt guilty for giving them such a horrible book.
I am a fan of David Pogue (the creator of the Missing Manuals series), and I love my MM Google book. However, the authors of that book are SMART, and can speak and write, and are expansive and creative in their writing, their examples and their indexing.
This book is the complete opposite. If I saw one more example using a Dickens book (how relevent!), I was going to puke.
I have used 3rd party manuals for 15+ years, and they were all really well written, organized and helpful. Again, this book is the complete opposite.
For my money and time and needs, even if this book was free, I would reject it.

I have used the Missing Manual for Excel and loved it. Yes, loved it. So when I needed help with Word where did I turn? (Rhetorical question)
I had used Excel for years and considered myself an advanced user. I was amazed at what I learned and how easy it was. The Word Manual did just the same!
I have a little ADD so when I open a technical book I often overload and shut down without even finishing a page. But this series is so easy to follow and covers the very basic (where I learned alot of shortcuts and tips I never knew) through the complex (where I learned what I really needed) without ever being complex. This is unique and I thank all those who make this resource available!

This book, Word 2007, the Missing Manual, is a very thorough and easy to use guide to the new 2007 Word program. I have used the old Word for years and find this an easy aid to assist me as I navigate the new Word.

I love this book. After being annoyed by lack of "Word" knowhow, this book answered all my questions and frustrations in an interesting, humorous way. I had checked out several from the library, but when it came to ordering, this was my first choice.
