Pretty much of a mess - 2006-05-22

First, the good news. This is not a bad book, if you can work through the bad news, below. It shares a failing of many computer books - 1/4 of the pages are redundant. "To change the colors......" "To format the type...." Over and over again. I suppose if one is skipping through, as I often do, it makes each chapter stand on it's own. However, in "Frames", for instance, the whole chapter is on trivia - how to move them, resize them, the Obvious. Then at the end there is 1 (one) tiny section about the meat - how to get the pages in the windows - barely more than a paragraph. But it's not a bad book - gradually you can sift out the useful stuff - most of it's buried in there somewhere, under the preoccupation with sizing, colors, etc.
One writer talked about typos and errors - FIRE THAT EDITOR NOW!!! He didn't notice, I guess, aside from what he did notice, that so many of the photos are wrong that you can't trust any of them. The captions and the text refer to a photo - many, many times, that is simply not the right picture. Every few pages, in fact. The writers do know their material, though, even though they write like computer geeks. Not a bad book - look through it in realtime before buying, though, to see if the worth to you is more than the rampant errors. Should be recalled, in fact, it's that bad.

Zak Ruvalcaba's Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed is a great book for beginner and intermediate web site designers, and advanced users moving to the Dreamweaver software!

I designed my first web site in 1997 and have been designing sites since with various tools and recently started using Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is an extraordinary tool and it contains many tools to improve the web designers work flow which significantly complicates learning how to use Dreamweaver effectively. Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed makes learning Dreamweaver 8 easy.

The book is great at covering all aspects of Dreamweaver usage, is very broad in coverage, and gets to the point. Yet it is covers enough to get one through designing static web pages, managing web sites and developing intermediate level web applications with Dreamweaver.

The book is not for those looking on "how to" design web pages, web sites, databases or applications. It does provide the basics on how to do all of these things using Dreamweaver 8.

In seven sections it covers; getting up to speed with Dreamweaver 8, Static web page development, team collaboration, incorporating multimedia and automation, and creating and building dynamic web pages. The latter is demonstrated using four server-side technologies, ASP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion and PHP. It also has three appendixes covering authoring XML, accessibility and extending Dreamweaver.

The book is backed up with a book specific web site where examples and additional information can be downloaded.

In comparison to other books, you would need to buy several to cover the information that is contained in this book and you may still lack the information on how to use Dreamweaver 8 effectively.

I have been using Deramweaver since release 3, but finally decided to buy a Deramweaver book. I bought this book after reading that it contained instructions on how to secure a site as well as using MS Access for dynamic asp pages.

Wow! If only I had bought this book months ago, I would have saved a lot of time.

What I really liked: nice screen captures; step by step database access; how to use extionsions including shopping cart; basic security; dynamic data access; css.... Just to name a few.

Good job guys!

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed - 2007-07-16

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed is a large, very large, and complete guide to the features in Dreamweaver 8. This book starts by giving the reader an overview about the latest features in this new version and then moves onto more details (including descriptions, how tos, and potential uses of each of these aspects) about all of the features of this program. This guide, like the Dreamweaver 8 program itself, is quite intuitive leading the reader gradually from the simple basics like designing static pages and taking full advantage of the programs site management systems that will be essential for newcomers to the program to more complex issues such as dynamic page design using server-side technologies like ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP.

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed will likely serve several purposes for the reader. He or she may use this guide to explore the features of Dreamweaver and then use this information to create their custom website. Once these tasks are complete, however, the reader will likely keep coming back to this text to gain better understanding of a particular feature, to seek answers to website problems, or simply to look for new site enhancement techniques.
