I recently switched from Word Perfect to Word and wanted in-depth help with an annoyingly complicated software package. Unfortunately this book is great in explaining the obvious but fails in deliver the real goods. Now, three months later, I have to say that the MS Office built in help (yes, the one that comes FREE with MS Office) is as detailed, more convenient to use, better, and actually answered my questions. This book is a waste of money.

Microsoft Word 2007 is a powerful and complex system that allows the user to do almost anything with a given document. For most people it is necessary to have a reference manual to successfully execute the commands available. Faithe Wempen provides such a manual. I have read this manual from cover to cover for a deeper understanding. I will not have need of all that is possible, but have noted the sections that I will use in my work as a writer. The efficient index quickly guides me to what I do need and will use.

Very good reference book although I had to rely heavily on the index to locate what I needed. I'm not sure I gained any benefits switching to Word 2007. Everything completely changed. It was like driving left side and then one day someone tells you, "Guess what? We're driving right side."

The book knowledge set is basic. The title is completely misleading and false. If you are a "power user" consider avoiding. This is a good book if you are seeking an entry-level junior college course education on the subject. There are many pictures (excellent); unfortunately, the associated text typically adds little value. Critical sections such in-depth styles is poorly covered, etc. The author spends excessive time discussing completely irrelevant information such as how Word 2007 does not work like high-end professional typesetting software--who cares? This is a book on Word 2007-- not a typesetting and publishing comparison. There seems to be endless parts of the text providing the complete file path for files for XP and Vista - surely, a more concise method could have been implemented - this verbose bloat must contribute to at least an extra 20+ pages (for this one item alone). The reader must wade through tons of muck to find the little gems--there is no concise reference herein for these items.
