Cisco CCIE Fundamentals: Network Design and Case Studies, Second Edition offers a comprehensive collection of updated configuration scenarios and design recommendations. By reading this book, you will gain insight into the implementation of practical internetworking strategies, identify features and capabilities of routers and switches, and begin the process of mastering the technologies and protocols necessary to become an effective Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE).

This two-part book is the compilation of design and configuration examples authored and previously released by Cisco Systems. Numerous subject matter experts have revised and restructured each chapter and added coverage of several new topics.

The design guide portion of this book is intended to support the network engineer who designs and implements router-based or switched internetworks. Practical design recommendations include coverage of large-scale networks with IGPs and BGP, ATM, APPN, DLSw+, DDR, ISDN, LAN switching, multicast networks, and more. The case study portion of this book presents real-world configurations that complement the design material. Implementation and troubleshooting advice is offered for EIGRP and OSPF redistribution, ATM, DDR, ISDN, network security, and HSRP.

Full of some very usefull case studies, this book has good approach towards network design. As a candidate for CCNP, I used this book to get some additional knowledge, from a practical point of view.

Not CCIE stuff - 1999-10-29

An O.K book for starters and who want to get to know a bit about N/W design. But, it's too non-technical to be of any use to designers. Definitely, not CCIE level. Not worth buying if you can get same info from cisco web-site

Case studies - nothing more. - 2000-11-14

It's really just a case studies book. If you want to look at typical examples how people use Cisco equipment - it's a right choice. But if you want to dig deeper in some particular area, or if you want to learn networking background you should read something else.

I like this way to explain purpose of this book. Let's imagine you met a good Cisco guy and he let you stand behind him and watch how he does his job for a little bit. You can grab some tricks, get some vision of the process, but he is not trying to teach you. It's a good addition to the strong theoretical background but not a replacement.

Good Book - but not study material - 2001-01-31

This is definately not a book to use to study for your CCIE, but it contains an amazing amount of information on a wealth of different topics from Routing protocols(including BGP4), APPN, SNA, ATM, Multicast, etc. It will sit on my desk as a great reference.

not so good as most people's review - 2003-06-18

in fact, it just explains more deeperly than the ccnp routing book and don't get the step that expounds the routing protocols throughout.

with all other cisco books , they are only technologies guide.
