CCNP Self-Study: Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) , Third Edition is a Cisco authorized, self-paced learning tool for CCNP preparation. Chapters open with a list of objectives to focus the reader's study. Wait for the official certification guide - 2007-08-03

I bought this book because it is (so far) the only one available from Cisco Press. I thought I'd be able to get a head start on passing the exam. It's not worth it. Wait for the official guide due out in a few weeks.

The author of this book is very fond of the acronyms, which is maddening to someone trying to learn IS-IS. Terms are not always clearly defined before being used in context, which also gets very frustrating. The correct answers that you need to learn for the test are often clouded with real world technicalities. These technicalities are usually minute enough you'd never actually run across it in practice, and they confused my studying more than once. This book also doesn't have enough detail to get you through the new test and will need to be supplemented by other studying. Without any kind of practice test, you are far better off waiting for the official book. I wish I had.

The lack of a CD is a big disadvantage for this book.

Great Book. A must for passing the BSCI exam - 2009-07-03

This book has a lot of detail and is very accurate. It allowed me to pass the BSCI test on my second try. I did not pass on the first try because I only used the Exam Certification Guide (which is a lousy book, full of mistakes, and not nearly enough information to pass the test). After failing the test the first time, I read this book and found many of the exam questions and diagrams actually in the book. I was able to pass the test the next week.
I also liked the labs at the end of the chapters. While I did not have enough routers to duplicate their setup, just seeing the complete set of commands put together in one place to accomplish a task was very helpful.
This is a must read to pass the BSCI exam (642-901).

The book is the best one that Ive seen so far, I wanted to prepare for the BSCI exam and I decided to take this book because I made a research and I found out that this book was being very useful, that people that were using this book as a study reference got approved on their exams. The book covers everything and much more that you need to know to pass on the exam, it includes all the tips and the concepts that you need to master for the exam, Ive read it twice and practiced on simulatores, that was about my BSCI exam which I had 975/1000.

I think this book generally accomplishes its goal of expanding on the topics you would find on the BSCI 642-901 exam. First off, I use the word "generally" in the preceding sentence because there are still a few topics/items here and there not covered in this book but were on the exam (such as the "aggregate-address" BGP command). When there are 3 questions (out of 50-60) on the exam which require you to know that command to answer the question correctly, like I had, you will see why every little detail matters. With those minor exceptions, if you know all the material in this book you stand a fair chance to pass the exam. The "problem" of being a book that expands on topics you need to pass the exam is that there is a fair amount of extemporaneous material contained in the book that you do NOT need to pass the exam. For example, the nitty gritty of all the fields in an IS-IS packet, the RFC's for BGP, and a large amount of commands on all of the various routing topics that you won't see on the exam. However, since that is the purpose of Cisco's "Self-Study" series, I'm not really holding it against in my score. Just keep that in mind if you plan to use this as an exam passing resource.

As a side note, this book does a far superior job of preparing you for the exam than Cisco's BSCI Exam Certification (642-901) guide. You can see my review of that book for more info and what purpose I feel that book has.
