South Korea > WOW FACTOR!

WOW FACTOR!

A well-known South Korean attorney was posed a question about what to do at business dinners in Asia if you do not drink alcohol. Can you refuse your host’s offer to have some wine? Can you just drink water, soda, or tea? Acknowledging that this is a common dilemma, not just in Korea, but for many people in many cultures, he suggested the following approach:

Even if you do not normally drink alcohol, it can be helpful if you agree to have a glass of wine with dinner, if only for the toasts. Of course, if you drain your glass, your neighbors will fill it up for you again. In fact, they will likely feel obligated to do so. But if you absolutely cannot drink any more, it is better to leave a good amount in your glass. If they offer to fill your glass again, and thereby suggest that you consume more of the alcohol, you can thank your hosts for the excellent wine, and politely mention that you’ve probably had enough for now. Your Korean hosts will not force you to drink, and they will not be offended as long as you seem appreciative of their cordiality and cheerfully participate in the conversations. Toasting with a glass of water or soda is another option, but it might be less awkward to receive the first glass of wine, drink as much as you like or can (even a sip), and then enjoy your meal and company!
