The Next Generation: Wireless Communications for Multimedia and Beyond

Of all wireless technologies for personal communications, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) offers the best combination of good signal quality, high security, low power consumption, and excellent system reliability. Features added in the IS-95 standard means this impressive list now also includes Third Generation (3G) data capabilities that will allow CDMA providers to offer Internet and intranet services for multimedia applications, high-speed business transactions, and telemetry. The upcoming cdma2000 standard will further expand usable bandwidth without sacrificing voice quality or requiring additional spectrum.

In this book by an experienced telecommunications authority, you will learn how to maximize the power of CDMA, migrate existing systems to the newest standards, and prepare for a smooth transition to features yet to come. IS-95 CDMA and cdma2000: Cellular/PCS Systems Implementation covers all aspects of up-to-date CDMA implementation and operation, including:

  • Coding and architecture

  • Radio interface and call flow

  • Physical, data link, and signaling layers

  • Handoff and power control

  • System security

  • Wireless Data

  • Reverse and Forward Link Capacity

  • RF Engineering and network planning

  • Evolution to Third Generation systems

Practicing engineers and their managers will benefit from the in-depth coverage of IS-95 systems, RF engineering, and capacity planning. Students will appreciate the forward-looking approach that offers a look at the future of the industry where they are preparing for careers. IS-95 CDMA and cdma2000: Cellular/PCS Systems Implementation offers both practical applications information and conveniently organized reference materials for anyone interested in the next generation of wireless telecommunications.

An introduction to IS-95, and a glance to CDMA2000 - 2003-02-15

The book's content is organized very well. I recommend the book those readers, as it is stated in its preface, who needs an easy and smooth introduction to IS-95 and CDMA 2000, but not requiring a detailed mathematical analysis, or complex and complete systems architectures, network protocols. The book gives a good outline of IS-95 and explain the advances coming with CDMA 2000.

MIGRATION FROM IS-95 TO CDMA2000 - 2002-01-21

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A COMPLETE OVERVIEW FOR CDMA2000 OR A DETAILED COMPARISON BETWEEN IS-95 AND CDMA2000 THIS BOOK WILL NOT GIVE YOU WHAT YOU WANT. BUT IF YOU HAVE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF RF DESIGN, IS95 CONCEPTS ARE EXPLAINED DETAILED ENOUGH TO GET THE BASICS AS WELL AS CDMA2000. EXCELLENT. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A GENERAL IDEA ABOUT CDMA TECHNOLOGY BUT NOT FOR ADVANCED STUDIES.

I have had this book for a couple of years. Reading it following the chapters of the book, I was frustrated by the lack of cohesion. New names were introduced without much explanations. Index section could be more complete. It is somewhat useful as a reference for certain details

"cdma2000" should not be in the title of this book! - 2002-06-01

This book has only one chapter on cdma2000, most of which is a re-work of what's available from standard specifications and freely downloadable from .... The use of "cdma2000" in the title of this book is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as the book provides little insight beyond what's readily (and cryptically) available elsewhere. The treatment of IS-95 is deeper, particularly on handoff. Coverage of power control is terse. On the whole, this book provides good grounding for IS-95 (cdmaOne), yet leaves the reader to make appropriate connections to cdma2000.
