Barrie North is the friend you want in your corner when you're learning the vast possibilities afforded to you through the Joomla content management system. I went from absolute beginner to a confident Joomla designer and developer building upon the lessons learned from this book.
Though this manual offers great technical lessons it also explains to you the inner workings of the system in terms that will educate the novice without boring the professional.
I actually took this book on vacation and read it cover to cover. The well-organized and easy-to-find information make it a handy reference long after you have your first site up and running. I often go back to take in the information that I skimmed over the first time and find that there really is an encyclopedic bounty to be found within its covers.
And, the book is just the beginning. Be sure to check out North's definitive site with tutorials, tips, downloads and reviews galore. When it comes to Joomla, this is the bible!

The chapets about making your own template and css are very badly structured and poorly written. If you know the basic this book is waste of money.

I bought this book because I needed something to help me get over the hump on a project. I don't have a lot of free time to spend getting it done (it's volunteer work) so I needed a book that was easy to read but still had enough details to help me understand what was needed for any particular aspect of a typical Joomla site. The book has 3 chapters that each deal with setting up a particular kind of website with Joomla (school, restaurant and another that slips my mind). These helped to show how to apply the more general knowledge presented earlier to a specific type of website. A good book overall and I don't regret buying it.

Being somewhat new to Joomla, I've been scouring the 'net for resources to help me communicate intelligently with my programmers, and do custom work for my sites as well as running them. This book is by far the best of the Joomla books available; I've bought quite a few.
What I like best about this one is that it goes beyond the basics (I also highly recommend "Joomla for Dummies", it's a very good book too); this gives a lot of detailed step by step tips in a very readable format. Super job on this book, it'll be a continuing reference for me for years to come; thanks very much Barrie for a super job with this - it's the world's best Joomla book, period.

I am an ASP.NET developer but could not find a working ASP.NET CMS application. My cousin, along with other sites I came across on the net, were doing what I wanted to do using Joomla! I took the plunge and started reading everything I could on Joomla! The online documentation guides only went do far. This book put everything together. I had no problem downloading and installing the templates from the author's web site. I have been taking notes all through the book and it is now an excellent reference material for a step by step guide. I have used it already to develop two web sites.`
