Adobe Illustrator CS3 Classroom in a Book, 2009-06-11
Reviewer rating:
I love the "Classroom in a Book" series. I am a very visual person and I find the lessons very easy to follow and understand. Doing then as the lesson is being explained is very helpful.

I am a big fan of Adobe's "Classroom in a Book" series!! I have found them to be the best and most efficient way to learn the programs in a short amount of time. Adobe Illustrator is no different... I was really happy with the skills I learned and it is a great resource to keep coming back to.
Not Groundbreaking, but Adequate, 2009-03-23

The Classroom in a Book series is usually well done, and this entry is no exception. The lessons are easy to follow and give you several options for various tasks; just enough to make you hungry for more information. Unfortunately, like most books in the series, its aimed at beginners, so you aren't going to get too deep into the program. Still, its very good for a refresher or to learn some of the new stuff, and it serves its purpose well.

Adobe Illustrator CS3 Classroom in a Book (Book & CD-ROM)

I recently purchased this book after learning by using my roommate's Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book. While I do like the series and think it is helpful, clearly designed, and a great introduction to programs, I think the series lacks some depth (like most books out there). After completing the entire Adobe Illustrator CS3 Classroom in a Book, I've listed some aspects I feel limit this series. This book probably will not serve as a good reference - better off using the Help.

Cons:
- The CD-ROM came somewhat damaged and took a while to read (this is just specific to my CD-ROM)
- While the book takes you through basic functions, it doesn't include a Quick Key page as seen in Adobe CS4 One-to-One books (I just purchased the InDesign book)
- The question and answer portions at the end of the chapters aren't as useful as you would think. The One-to-One series features multiple choice. I had better luck at these versus trying to answer the questions in the back of the Classroom in a Book.
- The steps can be hard to follow and I did find myself re-doing lots of the exercises. The pictures are helpful but don't always appear on the same page as the instructions.
- Should have a shortcut page or a quick question page based on some major functions - Expand and etc.

Pros
-Easy to read
- Clear and uncluttered lesson plans
- Goal-orientated, the chapters are not too long and are not too intimidating
- Affordably priced
- Includes a couple videos
