Overview

This thorough, self-paced guide to Adobe InDesign CS3 is ideal for beginning users who want to master the key features of this program, while readers who already have some experience with InDesign can use this book to familiarize themselves with InDesign CS3's newest features. Using step-by-step, project-based lessons, each chapter contains a project that builds upon the reader's growing knowledge of the program, while review questions at the end of each chapter reinforce the most important skills learned in each lesson. The companion CD contains all the assets readers will need to work through each project in the book. Adobe InDesign CS3, Adobe's page layout and design software, has been updated to accelerate user productivity with loads of new features: new Photoshop effects--including gradient feathering, inner shadows, and glows--that you can apply to objects on a page; finer transparency controls, which let you apply transparency settings independently to an object's fill, stroke, and content for more complex visual looks; numerous productivity enhancements; advanced find/change features; new table and cell styles; export to XHTML, and more.

Educational instructor notes—created to help teachers plan, organize, and time their lessons—are available for this book (and for other Classroom in a Book titles) at www.peachpit.com/instructorresources.

The tutorials are very easy to follow--instructions are thorough. I was expecting more of a reference guide, though. This book contains a series of exercises in which you create mock documents. It is helpful, but not if you are looking for a straight reference guide.

Find any other book than this one. I had an entire class taught off this book and then took a more advanced InDesign class and was caught in the dust compared to other people.

Weak! - 2009-01-18

Poor attempt at teaching someone how to use Indesign software.

1.Unclear instructions. You have to re-read a step multiple times to finally understand what you're supposed to do.

2.Incorrect directions as to where to find tools. You are misdirected and end up getting frustrated because you think you screwed up somewhere and can't figure it out...when really, they just don't edit and double check their own work before publishing.

3.Lacking explanations as to why you use or do certain tasks. It would be helpful to have a rounded understanding of the software, especially if you're teaching yourself.

4.Imaging is small and lacking clarity. When you're trying to follow the lesson plan and make sure you're doing it right, having appropriately sized images or the screen or tool panels would be useful.

This is a weak teaching resource and not worth the money you spend on it.

*instructors avoid this book unless you really want to discourage your students!*

Adobe InDesign Classroom CS3 - 2008-12-27

The book by is geared for the novice user, introducing the student to Adobe InDesign. The chapters are clearly written and illustrated, however each new chapter plays on the previous lessons, so unless you have prior knowledge of InDesign or more then a passing familiarity with Adobe theres no skipping about. As with all Adobe programs of this nature, theres plenty more to learn, takes years of trial and error I imagine, but this book is a good start. My take on this or any Adobe program,be prepared to spend many happy, albeit frustrating hours creating your first masterpiece.Patience is key,but a good instructor is priceless..don't leave home without one...

Classroom in a Book is an excellent reference, especially for those who are more advanced with the program.
