Overview

This is the Safari online edition of the printed book.

There is no denying it: With the introduction of the iPod and iTunes, Apple changed the face of music. While the iPod and iTunes are user-friendly, figuring them out for the first time can be tricky. Plus, they can do way more than meets the eye. In this fully updated best-seller, award-winning author, Scott Kelby, delivers what users need to know to get up to speed fast on Apple's popular iPod digital audio players and iTunes software.

Through full-color illustrations and simple step-by-step instructions, readers will learn all about: the brand new iPod touch, equipped with a multitouch interface, 3.5-inch widescreen display, and WiFi Web browsing; the iPod shuffle, sporting a new belt clip and new colors; the iPod nano, featuring a new glamorous square shape, video, an enhanced interface, larger and brighter display, and new colors; the iPod classic which now incorporates iTunes cover flow, enhanced interface, and a sleeker design; and the new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, which now lets iPod users browse the iTunes Store and purchase music over a wireless connection straight onto their Apple mobile device.

Scott also provides the basics of how to share music between Macs and PCs; sync iTunes-created playlists as well as iPod-created voice notes; burn large playlists to CDs; download and watch videos; and more. Best of all, Scott has peppered the guide with tons of time-saving tips and tricks that typically can only be gleaned through hard-won experience.

Covers only basic stuff; unfriendly toward PC users - 2009-04-21

Contrary to what some of the positive reviews say, the 5th edition of this book does not cover nearly all the stuff you can do with iPod and iTunes. In fact, it just cover the basics, like a glorified version of Apple's help files. (In this regard, it shares the same dishonor with most other iPod/iTunes books, including the Missing Manual one.)

There's really nothing "cool" about this book, unless you, like the author, consider creating a playlist cool by itself. A "uber-cool" tip he shares is if you yank out the headphone while your iPod is playing, the song pauses. Dude, my Sony MP3 Walkman from 2003 could already do this!

And the author seems to be in love with himself. At the beginning of every chapter he congratulates himself for picking a "cool" chapter title. Sigh... why does the poor reader have to put up with this BS? And he keeps reminding you that he belongs to the "cool club" of teenage-land. If only he expent more energy covering cool things about the iPod...

Finally, unlike other iPod/iTunes books, this one is rather unfriendly towards PC users: all the screenshots of iTunes are from the Mac. Yes, there're subtle differences and this Mac-only approach can confuse PC users, who constitute the majority of iPod users, too. Other books like the Missing Manual mix PC screenshots with Mac ones. (FYI, I use both platforms -- plus Linux and Unix.)

If you want a beginner's guide to iPod and iTunes, the Missing Manual book is better. Or even the For Dummies one!

A 'show me' book, which means lots of visuals, a chatty style, and a focus on the most requested, useful things about the iPod - 2009-05-11

Any owner of the iPod whether it be the touch, nano, shuffle or more, needs THE IPOD BOOK, now updated in its 5th edition to reflect all versions of iPod. This is a 'show me' book, which means lots of visuals, a chatty style, and a focus on the most requested, useful things about the iPod. There's only one topic per page so it's not 'cluttered' with too much. Simply the perfect choice for iPod owners.

this book is one of the best teaching books I have ever read. It doesn't go front to back, it goes where you take it. Read the table of contents, find the what page the info you want is on and skip to it or go back to it. this book tells you EVERYTHING you will ever need to know!
