Fairly Good Information on IPods - 2009-01-12

While I've owned an IPod for some time, there were always questions on how to perform certain tasks and how to organize files. Of course the instructions you get with the IPod are next to useless.

This book is fairly current, including the newest Nanos, Classics as well as the Touch. Covering so many units does get a bit confusing but you can sort it out. It's a good reference and I found it helpful, though I think if they had organized it a bit more directed at one particular type at a time, rather than skipping around, it would have been easier to use.

Good comprehensive guide to iPod and iTunes - 2009-03-16

This is a good, well-written pocket guide to the iPod and iTunes that covers all models of iPods (iPod Touch and the "traditional" iPods), so you won't find the entire book relevant. As an iPod Touch owner however, I did find the coverage of that model pretty comprehensive nevertheless.

The chapters on the iTunes Store, iTunes Wi-Fi and Apps Stores, are good and there are some nice tips on usage.

I would have liked to see some more troubleshooting information, particularly on setting up the Wifi connection, which can be a real pain.

Overall, this book is a good buy, particularly for iPod Touch users.

A comprehensive pocket guide that can also be read on the iPhone and iPod Touch - 2009-03-04

I already have the paperback edition, but I decided to buy the Kindle edition because from today on (March 4, 2009), Kindle books can also be read on the iPhone and iPod Touch! This means you will be able to buy and read Kindle version books even when you are outside of the U.S. Wow! Amazon will make a lot more money.

This pocket guide to iPod and iTunes has 333 pages (paperback) and covers all models of iPods. A large portion of pages are devoted to the iPod Touch because this model has many more functions and features compared to the traditional iPods. There is also good coverage of the iTunes Store, and a chapter on the iTunes Wi-Fi and Apps Stores. The last chapter is on usage tips and troubleshooting.

This book is the most recently (Jan 6, 2009) published book on iPod and iTunes available in Kindle edition. Having this in my iPod Touch means that I can always look up something about iPod/iTunes or simply browse around (and leave the physical book at home). The cost of this Kindle edition is also lower than the paperback version. For only $6.39, this is a very good deal!

Organized for people who own the Ipod Touch, or that and more - 2009-09-07
Reviewer Rating: 1 star rating2 star rating3 star rating4 star rating5 star rating
This guide was disappointing. Chapter two is called "Touching the iPod Touch", and it introduces many of the concepts used later in the book. All the other iPods (Nano, Shuffle, Classic)are discussed in chapter three, but often the author asks the reader to remember what he's read in chapter two, or assumes the concepts are already understood. This means you have to read chapter two carefully, whether you have a Touch or not. Moreover, it isn't always clear whether things said in chapter two are generally true or are true only of the Touch. If you own a Touch, or if you own a Touch plus other types of iPods, and you want a guide, this book may work; but otherwise this organization makes it awkward to understand.

Also, this book will hide all the number keys in the top row of a standard PC keyboard when held one way, and will hide 1 through 7 if held the other way. It's pretty big. This is not a pocket-sized book.

On the plus side, it is inexpensive, and it did explain to me (with a little digging) several things I didn't figure out using the iPod and iTunes help systems / .pdf manuals. It is certainly better than nothing and is a useful addition.

In comparison, this book was nowhere near as informative and helpful as "iPod the Missing Manual" by J. D. Biersdorfer with David Pogue, which is perhaps 20% bigger and costs about twice as much. I bought the Missing Manual some weeks after buying the Pocket Guide, and wish I could have bought it first (and then would not have bought the Pocket Guide).
