When the RED company first announced it was building a movie
camera that could shoot in 4K (a huge amount of information
captured on its sensors, matching the quality of traditional film
studio cameras) and that it would make this camera available at the
rock bottom price of $17K, the industry went wild with anticipation
and pre-order spaces for the camera filled up. Now that the RED One
camera has been in the hands of those first customers, some new
worklflows have been established that have never been used
before.
This book is the first on the market to give the inside scoop on
RED and how to use the camera in a variety of projects, for the
independent filmmaker on up. Readers will get an objective look on
using the camera with a variety of editing programs such as Final
Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and Avid. They’ll also learn about the
various hardware add-ons that the unique
“future-proof”’ modular camera system affords its
users.
Throughout the book, readers will hear from well-known filmmakers
such as Peter Jackson and Steven Soderbergh, who were among the
earliest adopters of this nascent technology. They’ll see
their production methodology on the bleeding edge and their
post-production workflow using Final Cut Studio and RED’s
proprietary tools. Other cinematographers and film editors offer
detailed direction as well, including Rodney Charters (24), David
Mullen (Stay Cool), and Simon Duggan (Knowing).
With more cameras in development and the industry’s full
embracement of this incredible technology that offers high-end
filmmaking to a much wider group of professionals, this book is a
timely and important resource for the adopters of RED.

Noah has created a wonderful book that helps introduce the world to the amazing camera, the RED One. If you are new to the camera or are interested in how it works, this is THE book. Presented in a very clear, logical and orderly manner, the book takes you through the history and development as well as the actual operations of the camera system. The RED is truly revolutionary and has created a tidal wave of emotion throughout the film industry.

I wanted the RED ONE ever since I heard about it. I put in a reservation, but when my number came up I couldn't afford it. So I've been shooting on the Canon 5D Mark II. Since Scarlet is coming out I've been saving my money and I'm ready to jump into the world of RED! I've tried to learn as much as I can from every source I could find about the RED ONE and the technology around RED, and this book has been my best source for knowledge. It's probably not for well versed professionals, but for independent filmmakers who are looking to get Red Ones, Scarlets or new comers, I can't recommend it enough.

For those of you caught up in the RED phenomenon, counting down the days till you can actually place your hands on the camera, then there is no better choice than RED: The Ultimate Guide to Using the Revolutionary Camera. Noah Kadner, takes the reader through a step by step introduction to the camera, covering all areas from History to Post Production.
This book is ideal for those considering purchasing or renting the RED One. No one wants to show up to a shoot unprepared, and Kadner's book is a perfect introduction to the camera. It is not an encyclopedia, not every question is answered nor every technical detail covered; but, that was not the purpose. The purpose was to introduce you to this new and exciting camera, acting as a guide to get you going on how to operate and deal with the new technology. Great read!

When I ordered this book, I was really hoping for "the ULTIMATE" guide to the Red camera system. You know, something that would explain some of it's quirks or how to get the best out of it under varied lighting conditions or even some discussion into the technical aspects of the camera beyond where in the menus you can find the settings for Zebra Stripes. While Noah Kadner is obviously an expert with the camera and its support systems, he provides very little insight for working professionals. Even the First Person POVs at the end of the chapters are little more than anecdotes about working with the Red camera system.
On the other hand, if this is your first time working with advanced video acquisition systems and specifically the Red, then this book is definitely for you. The book does presume you have the most basic of technical proficiency with digital cinematography; mostly to understand its terms, but even that is dealt with by providing a simple glossary in the back. I feel the strength of this book is to provide a quick "up and running" guide to working with the Red camera and its peripherals. It also competently explains the integration of those support systems to provide a comprehensive review for the choices we face in post-production when you acquire your footage with the Red camera.
Ultimately, if you are a working professional, you'll find more resources and technical information by spending the time it takes to read this book at the Red and Red User websites...as even Mr. Kadner suggests.
