Safari Books Online is a digital library providing on-demand subscription access to thousands of learning resources.
FrameMaker, which is at the core of the Adobe Technical
Communication Suite, has long been the gold standard for writing,
illustrating, and laying out technical documentation in print. With
new features like support for rich media objects and powerful PDF
export, FrameMaker excels at authoring online documents as
well.
This Classroom in a Book (a revision of the successful FrameMaker 7
Classroom in a Book) begins with a survey of the fundamentals of
FrameMaker 9: styling paragraphs, placing graphics, creating
tables, adding captions, cross-references, and footnotes. Later
chapters cover long-document features, such as tables of contents
and indexes. Preparing content for output to print or to screen
(PDF or HTML), working with Unicode (for handling foreign
languages), and using DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture)
to structure documents using XML, round out the coverage.

Most definitely not the text to learn FM. Unfortunately, the proofreader/copy editor did not spare the time to check the book and rid it of all its errors and inconsistencies.
From Lesson 2 (page 24) where the instructions conflict with the screen shots and pages referred to in the text to Lesson 11 (where I'm currently fashing) where the Modul9_guide for the Lesson is already there and is being replaced though the instructions on pg 192 indicate this should be a new file.
The TOC generated with an error re the file 'care_and_maintenace' returened a 'unresolved cross reference' error notice.
Then check out pages 25, 29, 30, 31-33, 35 for the multitudes of errors and instructions that do not match what's happening on one's screen.
Page 29 instruct the user to click on the Default Font Icon yet it shows the Basic icon as the one. On the same page a paragraph referred to the screenshot on pg 28 but indicate it's on pg 29.
So much more but I really do not have the patience to list them.
ZERO (because I am forced to choose 1 star) and 100% frustration is my rating

I won't go over anything everyone else has already said. So I'll only comment on one of the authors associated with the book.
Dear Mr. Bernard Aschwanden,
Why on earth did you associate your name with this title? I'm assuming you had a hand in it's making since your name appears in the File Info's Author section for modul9TOC.fm of the training files included with this book.
Please do us all a grand favor Mr. Aschwanden, fix the grossly abundant amount of errors in this text and see about getting a new version distributed. After watching your online training course over at the VTC website, which in all honesty had it's own issues also, I am really disappointed to know you had a part to play here.

I gave this 2 stars only because I couldn't find another book on FrameMaker 9. I've only gone through 2 chapters but there are tons of errors - they used the wrong button images, sent you to incorrect pages in the sample docs, spelling. How did Adobe allow this out the door? If you can find another book, I'd try that over this.
