Incoherent - 2009-10-12

The book goes all over the place. The author pulls out objects and methods out of thin air, doesn't explain how, where those objects are. And his attempt at humour is very lame. The book is incoherent, and at the end of the book, you really haven't learned anything. Leave this P.O.S. on the shelf. Look for a better book.

I needed a jumpstart to learing more about Ruby on Rails and this book was the answer. Although most of the software listed is outdated, I easily converted the instructions to apply to the new software. It was a great tool and assisted me in my search for a better web design tool.

This book is prepared in a way that can be understood by beginner programmers at the same time, it teaches the foundation of Ruby programming. I like the resourcefulness of the author. He was very helpful and accessible for every problem I have encountered

Badly outdated but well written and quite accessible for the n00b - 2009-03-20

so this was my 1st experience and it's a little disheartening to find out this is for an old version of rails on a xp platform. It's well written, exciting helpful and engaging but I'd love to see a updated version of this. Barry does offer updates on the site but for 30 bucks and a lot of room for a new edition to the series I am still on the lookout or an updated version or a sequel. He holds your hand and provides plenty of cross reference from one chapter to another but be warned this is old and a lot has changed in rails. I commend him for the gui rad rails tool and the express setup. This will get you ready for the next book. Check out Chris Pine's pages and the pragmatic programmer site. I thank Mr. Burd for his book none the less.

I'm not sure what the other reviewers here expected, but I was pleased with the book. I did not anticipate an exhaustive and complete course in RoR programming. I did expect a light introduction and a means to get up and running, and that I got. I'm coming from the position of a designer working in Dreamweaver. Although Dreamweaver supports PHP and MySQl, the interface is limited by necessity. I wanted an introduction (for Dummies, remember?) to building dynamic sites with RoR, and that's what I got here -- at a reasonable price. Because I'd done my homework, I knew that the book did not cover the latest version of RoR -- but that's OK because there's nothing wrong with coming up to speed with an older stable version. My major complaint has to do with the publisher, not the author. If you flip the book over and look for the book's online support site, the URL doesn't work -- and there's no clue where to go. I found the author's site where the book is well supported, but I had to hunt for it on my own. Now that's not "Dummy" friendly! I will undoubtedly move on to more comprehensive books, but this was just the introduction I was looking for.
