1.2 Computer-System Organization

Before we can explore the details of how computer systems operate, we need general knowledge of the structure of a computer system. In this section, we look at several parts of this structure. The section is mostly concerned with computer-system organization, so you can skim or skip it if you already understand the concepts.
THE STUDY OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
There has never been a more interesting time to study operating systems, and it has never been easier. The open-source movement has overtaken operating systems, causing many of them to be made available in both source and binary (executable) format. This list includes Linux, BSD UNIX, Solaris, and part of Mac OSX. The availability of source code allows us to study operating systems from the inside out. Questions that previously could only be answered by looking at documentation or the behavior of an operating system can now be answered by examining the code itself.
