Gaining Buy-In

In order to implement successful Positive Manager Behaviour initiatives, it is essential to get buy-in from the key individuals. Without the support and engagement of the main players and decision-makers, the likelihood is that, even if you get the initiative started, you will find it hits the buffers, stalls or requires inordinate amounts of effort to drive through. So, an analysis of who these key individuals are and how to get their buy-in is a vital next step in the process of implementation.

Who are the Key Players?

The answer to this question will depend on the situation in the organization with which you are working. However, some groups to consider are:

  • Other professionals/practitioners: As mentioned earlier, taking a multi-disciplinary approach is likely to boost effectiveness, so your gaining buy-in campaign may need to start with the range of professionals on whose work the initiatives touch. This may include HR, Learning and Development, Health and Safety, Occupational Health and others.
