2.3.1 Introduction

For several years, there has been an ongoing trend in fixed line networks to migrate all circuit-switched services to a packet-switched IP infrastructure. In practice, it can be observed that fixed line network operators are migrating their telephony services to a packet-switched architecture offering both telephony and Internet access either via DSL or a cable modem. This means, that circuit-switched technology is replaced by VoIP-based solutions, as will be described in more detail in Chapter 4. In wireless networks, this trend has not yet begun.
