Great Introduction to SharePoint, 2009-06-08 Reviewer rating: Simply the best introduction to SharePoint that I've ever read. Five of the nine chapters are devoted to speaking plainly about what elements make up a site. There are pictures on every page which makes this paperback book a very quick read. The last four chapters talk about creating lists that are specific to project management like risks and change requests but I think that even people who do not manage projects will benefit from seeing an example of when to use a SharePoint site all the way through from creation to archive. While this book is not going to teach Project Managers anything new about PMP methodology, I think it's real value lies in helping any member of a project team to easily grasp the concepts of why SharePoint is a great tool for evaluating risk, reporting progress, and helping everyone on the project stay on task. | Practical Uses for SharePoint - Finally, 2009-04-29 Reviewer rating: I've worked with the SharePoint product line for almost 10 years and I think it is growing into a fabulous platform for collaboration and communication. It is so full of features, options, and capabilities that many of the users I've worked with in the past have just given up for being completely and utterly overwhelmed. There are many books, training classes, blogs, web sites, etc. that will tell you "How to" do things in SharePoint. But, try to find resources on "What do I use it for" and you'll be amazed at just how few results you can find that actually tell you anything.
Dux has done a great job in giving a practical example of an "every day" use of this wonderful product. I thought the book was very easy to follow with a good mix of project management methodology and theory along with a healthy helping of how to apply it to SharePoint. The workshop exercises were easy to follow - even for my most techno-challenged PMs. And it reminded them a couple of times that they needed to actually follow good PM methods they had "forgotten".
In all, I recommend this book to anyone that uses, administers, designs, develops, or architects in the SharePoint world. Even if you don't learn anything about SharePoint or Project Management, it is a great resource to show to others.
I also hope this serves as an example of what is really needed in the SharePoint arena - a gap other authors will hopefully fill - Practical uses for SharePoint.

The explanations are clear, to the point, and written from the perspective of a real-world project manager.
What I like best about the book is the series of workshops that accompany each section, as they provide immediate hands-on experience with the concepts and features that have just been covered. Using this method, even a newcomer to SharePoint will be able to quickly acquire the practical knowledge that will allow them begin using SharePoint as a powerful project management tool.
The author's conversational style, real-world tips and "SharePoint Dojo" case study make this an easy and fun way to learn. For those who want to get themselves and their teams up to speed quickly on using SharePoint for their projects, this is a definitely a great way to go!
