Reader Reviews From Amazon (Ranked by 'Helpfulness') Average Customer Rating: based on 9 reviews. Author forgot his audience, 2009-05-19 Reviewer rating: I purchased this book in hopes of making a quick start into Visual Basic Express Edition. Although not inexperienced in programming, it had been a while, and needed to familiarize myself with the new techniques and such. This book was very little help in accomplishing that goal. The book was written in a very dry manner, with the author assuming that the reader had considerably more knowledge on Visual Basic than the supposed target market. In numerous situations, the author just tells you "type this, and look what happens!!", with no explanation of what the syntax or programming code means. The book touches on many subjects, but doesn't follow through with them. I was very diappointed with this book, and could not recommend this book for someone to begin using Visual Basic. | VB Express Startup, 2009-01-08 Reviewer rating: Getting this product is worth it just to avoid the hassle of downloading all the various separate files you need to run the various express editions included on the CD. Not a bad start-up guide either but don't expect more. | Most Unobjective Presentation Method, 2008-12-24 Reviewer rating: When you read this book ("Microsoft Visual Basic 2008", by Patrice Pelland), you feel that you must try your best to be very patient, for the subject matter is prsented in a too much worded way. This is so because the subject matter is not explained in an objective way, for there are too many words that say just a little bit. Instead of phrasing the subject matter with the right amount of words, the auhor prefers to use as many words as possible, no matter what is needed.
This kind of paraphrasing, or overwording, tends to make you impatient, and you start abhor what you are most interesting in, that is to say, you begin to avert what you want most.
In this way your main objective turns unobjective, and because of this I do not recommend the reading of this book, if you really want to learn how to prgram in Visual Basic | You can download the software for free at MS site !, 2008-11-20 Reviewer rating: Considering the previous comments that this was written based on beta code and the fact not mentioned that you can download the VB studio software for free from microsoft why bother buying the book. You can also download SQL server, C++, .... for free. Save your money and spend it on a better book without the software. So if your buying this because of the software you should re-evaluate your rational. Software available for free so your really buying just the book. | Build some things but not all, 2008-11-10 Reviewer rating: This book was written based on Beta code.
I found that some things worked and some didn't, with absolutely NO troubleshooting guide to help explain why some of the code in the book gives errors - even when using the software supplied on the CD.
Some examples worked OK - some created seemingly unfixable errors. This is extremely frustrating since, if you are like me, you will assume that you have done something wrong when really it is a Microsoft problem!
