"Very basic, mostly HTML4, not much new" - by Yossu on 05-DEC-2011

If you have even a basic knowledge of HTML, then you won't find much of interest in this book. The author spends more time telling you how to use Notepad than he does explaining HTML5.

The quality of the code is also rather poor. Instead of explaining how to structure a document properly, he shows code that often looks like the rubbish that was so prevalent in the 1990s. We've come a long way since then, but this author doesn't seem to have noticed.

The amount of actual HTML5 in this book is limited, and so makes the title very misleading.

Poor quality book, not worth the time.

"Microsoft HTML5 Step by Step" - by Greg Quimby on 13-MAR-2011

This book is an excellent introduction to HTML 5, and even touches upon some of the more advanced topics such as Canvas and JavaScript programming.  There are plenty of step-by-step instructions, examples, and pictures to help the novice along the way.  If you're looking for a first book on HTML 5, then I would suggest you start here.

If you are already familiar with previous HTML versions and want a reference guide in order to learn what has changed in HTML 5 and how best to use it, then the Key Points section at the end of each chapter is just for you.  Here you’ll find a summary of the important items that were detailed throughout the chapter.

The topics covered in Microsoft HTML5 Step by Step include HTML programming, adding Cascading Style Sheets, presenting audio and video on your web pages, and creating user forms.  The very last chapter will introduce you to Microft’s Expression Web, which can be used to create a professional looking web site through a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) design studio.

If you are looking for that one book that can teach you HTML programming, or if you are looking for an updated HTML reference guide, then this book is definitely worth reading.
