Ceremony Site

If you have time to record it, the ceremony site before the guests have arrived can be incredibly photogenic, and capturing it well will give you elegant establishing shots. The emptiness of the site highlights the sense of anticipation that characterizes the general mood at that point in the day—not to mention the couple’s anticipation of this event, which might be months or even years in the making! Assuming you have time for this, you will want to get an establishing shot that includes the empty seats. Try to get this shot from an interesting angle—shooting from a balcony behind an outdoor setting or on the altar facing the seats in a religious setting are two ways to capture the breadth of the scene.

Shooting your subject from a low angle can often be rather unflattering to people, as it can distort their features. That said, it can be a wonderful perspective for shooting scenery. Try shooting low from the aisle looking up toward the ceremony site, and the site will appear appropriately imposing and grand! Rows of chairs are fun to shoot birds-eye or at eye level to the seats. (See Figure 5.16.)
