I'm quite disappointed in this book as well.  if you don't have Impact this book is useless.
The title is misleading - It should be "How to utilize Impact with html5"

"Excellent book for impactjs" - by Gary Bisaga on 26-JUL-2012

This is an excellent book for impactjs developers or those who want to become same. It leads you through development of a game step by step using the toolkit. Along the way, the author gives many hints and sage advice for those just starting out in game development. His discussion on the asset pipeline, for example, is excellent.

The only reason I give four instead of five stars is that it's not very well indicated that this book is almost exclusively oriented around impactjs. The general advice would, obviously, be applicable to any game development effort. However, that advice is generally buried down among other contents such that you most likely would most likely never notice it. Now, everybody should check out a book's content on amazon or in a live bookstore before they obtain the book,, so I don't feel too sorry for somebody who didn't realize the book's focus. However, the book's title could make it clearer what the orientation of the book is.

"A Book about Impact ($99)" - by ajw on 24-JUN-2012

I'm very disappointed in this book.  Its about how to use the Impact toolkit to write HTML5 games.

This, in itself, would be OK if the Impact toolkit weren't $99.  There is no developer's or demo version to download.

So ... thanks.  I just paid to read the manual of a toolkit I don't own.

"Introducing HTML5 Impact Engine" - by Bushstar on 07-MAY-2012

This book will work you through creating a game using the commercial Impact engine. So only get this if you also plan on buying the Impact engine. The title is misleading as the focus of this book is on using the Impact engine and not coding a HTML5 game from scratch. You should have a decent knowledge of Javascript before reading this book.

I purchased my copy of Impact and started working through this book. It takes you on a tour of the Impact engine while building a basic platform game. At the end you should be well placed to create your own games in Impact. I'm pleased with this book and even more so that I've discovered a HTML5 gaming engine as good and polished as Impact.

I would have liked more details and some advanced topics but this book is only 100 pages long and for those pages it gives a lot of information. It's good to see that O'Reilly have given the Impact engine a look in. Shame about the misleading title, I'm sure that is going to attract some negative reviews as this book will not get you anywhere without Impact.
