I was optimistic that this would be a deep-dive into the ASP.NET Web API and show me the ins and outs of using it as another tool in my toolbox. It is not. The text is almost exclusively focused on how the authors think APIs should be built using “hypermedia,” with significant time spent justifying it. There is very little actionable code within first 6 chapters. I understand the authors are trying to establish *why* they build APIs the way they do, but it ends up being much too focused on their theoretical ideal. When you finally get to their sample project in chapter 7, it’s not a tutorial or even a practical walk-through. If you’re not building an API according to the author’s ideals, don’t bother with this text. Disappointing.
