Good job of explaining the basics (e.g. SVG) before diving into D3. Despite the broad title 'Interactive Data Viz', the book is the best introduction to D3 (on Safari Books online) as well.

"Entertaining and accessible intro to D3" - by Mark Horgan on 04-SEP-2013

This is an entertaining and accessible introduction to D3. It introduces you to all the main aspects of D3 and is quite easy to get through. Following along with the example code helps a lot. If you don't want to run the examples, the output of the example code for each stage is presented which helps make sense of what's going on.

"Great intro to D3" - by OWaz on 16-JUL-2013

Extremely well written with plenty of code examples. Reading this book helped me a lot with understanding how to use D3. I really liked how the book was written in a way that sounds like a conversation with a friend instead of some robot regurgitating the D3 API.
