Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Part 1 (CIPT1), is a Cisco®-authorized, self-paced learning tool for CCVP® foundation learning. This book provides the knowledge necessary to install, configure, and deploy a Cisco Unified Communications solution based on Cisco Unified Communications Manager, the call routing and signaling component of the Cisco Unified Communications solution. By reading this book, you will gain an understanding of deploying a Cisco Unified Communications Manager to support single site, centralized, distributed, and hybrid call processing models.
This book focuses on Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 6.x. You will learn how to install and configure Cisco Unified Communications Manager, power over Ethernet switches, and gateways using MGCP. You will also learn how to build a scalable dial plan for on-net and off-net calls. The dial plan chapters of the book cover call routing, call coverage, digit manipulation, class of service, and call coverage components. This book will teach you how to implement media resources, LDAP directory integration, and various endpoints including Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Cisco Unified Video Advantag endpoint configuration is covered, in addition to, Cisco Unity® voice mail integration and basic voice mail box creation. Various user features are discussed including Presence.

I guess most of the material is what you would expect. Some of it is just made up ala Calvin's reports to Mrs Wormwood. Page 89 includes the whopper "Stratum level 3 timing sources are based on the rare earth element quartz, which has become affordable enough that it is built into most off-the-shelf wristwatches."
1) Quartz is cheap and abundant. Always has been.
2) Quartz is not an rare-earth element (or an element at all)
3) Clock Stratums from the Telecordia/Bellcore standards have nothing to do with NTP strata, which simply define a degree of removal from an atomic clock, or similar.
Thus far, not impressed.
No a very good Book - 2008-10-29

A was looking for good CUCM book for version 6.x and this was supposed to be my answer. But after few pages, i realize that this is not. For example, if you check ldap integration example you will realize that is non-working copy-paste example from Cisco CCO. After many mistakes I stopped reading it. Not recommended.
Still Cisco CallManager Fundamentals (2nd Edition) (Fundamentals) is the king.(Even though is for version 4.x, but main principles still apply)
Good book to study by and reference. - 2008-07-27

As a voice consultant it is often hard to find a book that is both informative for the topic and useful during the actual work. This book succeeded on both fronts. Using this book I was able to recently pass the Cisco exam for this material. However it is far more important for me to have a book that I can use to get the work done. IP telephony has become such a complex detailed solution that no one can keep every detail of how to do something in their head. This book has already been a great reference to remind me of the specific steps I need to configure a portion of Communications Manager. I always have it handy and recommend it to my clients any chance I get.
Great book!!! - 2008-07-01

This book is awesome. By far one of the better books written for a topic that can be really complex. He really knows what he's talking about. I use this book all the time- this helped me pass the CIPT courses and now I'm a CCVP!!!
