covers 2D sprites and basically nothing else; its the today worst purchase I personally have ever done.
Dont buy the book - just download the DirectX SDK and use the provided documentation which beats this book any day!

I read the entire book across three days and found it to be a very good introduction to DirectX 10. It is very easy reading with very simple explanations. It's not a book for those who are already familiar with DirectX. This is a complete beginners book.

I am sure the book is good but they don't tell you that you need to buy extra software so that you can do the actual programming until you get a ways into the book.

Already being a programmer, but not familier with DX10, I was able to read the entire book cover to cover in a single Saturday. Wendy did a great job writing simple and concise explanations for the DX10 architecture, from basic rendering pipeline and transforms, all the way to a fun procedurally generated mesh. An easy read. I had a demo landscape and camera coded up in a few hours. Wendy (thankfully) didn't bog down into the math behind everything, and instead just told me what I needed to know to get up and running. Highly recommended!

I'm using this as the textbook for a course I teach on the subject, so I obviously value it and think Wendy Jones did a great job with it. My only complaint is that, simply, there is NO SUCH THING as DirectX 10. This is a somewhat incorrect title. Even if you go to the Microsoft download site, there is no reference to DirectX 10. Within even the past year, Microsoft still referred to the SDK as DirectX 9.0c, but has recently dropped the "9.0c" in favor of the release month/year to designate the version. So what you'll find now is "DirectX SDK (August 2008)", for instance.
