Where Should You Start?

Presuming you’ve decided to do much of the legwork yourself, let’s start here in the United States. Leaving the comfort of home or the office is not yet required. A great deal of big-picture information can be gleaned from numerous published sources, free as well as fee-based. Basic facts about India, like political conditions and macroeconomic changes, are reasonably easy to obtain. Pertinent business information, such as taxes, licenses, corporate laws, and insurance may require a few well-placed telephone calls or paid subscriptions to bona fide data-retrieval services. If there’s no rush, then this research can be assigned to the company’s audit and legal staff or part-time help.

In India, you will find that information is likely to be all over the map. It will take longer to process than anticipated and, if it’s your first venture, may pose more questions than it answers. No matter how hard you may try and how much data mining you do, there will be significant gaps to fill.
