The Shell

The word shell describes the initial screens and menus a player encounters when first starting a game. The most basic purpose of a shell is to act as an introduction and a doorway to the gameplay. By offering options like Save and Load, controller configurations, and a good old Start button, you are allowing players to choose how and when they want to play the game.

More importantly, from an artistic standpoint, it’s essential to remember that the shell is the first thing players will see when they play your game. It is the first opportunity to establish the tone, theme, and pacing while at the same time setting the player’s expectations for the rest of the experience. Realizing that this opportunity exists and taking advantage of it is what makes for a truly good shell. It’s very important that the visual style and feel of the shell is consistent with that of the game. For example, if the game is going to take place in a medieval/fantasy setting, the shell should not look high-tech and polished, but instead should look like something consistent with the medieval fantasy context.
