Using reference plays an essential role in the process of creating a quality game. Gathering and studying reference can make the difference between an exceptional game and a mediocre product.

Here is a perfect example. Let’s say you want to draw a portrait of a friend. You could sit down, imagine what he or she looks like, and start to draw. However, you’ll get a very different result than if you had used a photo or had that person in front of you. With a reference, you’ll be able to capture the subtleties and details you would never be able to think of on your own. Whether it’s a person or a building, a reference gives you goals, direction, clues, and motivation.
