1.1 WebSphere MQ overview WebSphere MQ (MQ) is essentially a transport mechanism. It is a courier service for interapplication messages that does not require the communicating applications to be running at the same time, does not require them to be aware of each other's operating environment, and is communication protocol neutral. 1 Consider this analogy: An e-mail system allows two people to send and receive messages between different systems without the need for each person to be sitting at their computer waiting for the message.
