General Log Files

The general Linux server log files are found in the directory /var/log. The most important of these logs are described here:

  cron Contains the crontab log. Scheduled jobs are logged here when crontab runs scheduled jobs.

  messages Contains the general Linux alert log. Both startup and event (errors) information are stored in this log.

  rpmpkgs Lists the packages installed on this system.

  secure Contains the security log. Logs connections to the server.
