Cultural Note

As in some other Asian cultures, an infant is considered to be one year old when he or she is born. Laws pertaining to age are based on the first of the year. For example, the drinking age in South Korea is 19, so a teenager in Korea can drink on January 1 of the year he or she turns 19.
