Now that we have defined our schema and associated data, we are now ready to get to work on recovering from all of these pesky user-induced errors.

Flashback Query and Flashback Table

Flashback Query (and its relatives) and Flashback Table are grouped into a single section because both have their functionality based entirely on technology that has existed in the Oracle Database for years: undo segments. Historically, undo (previously known as rollback) was used for transaction consistency and to provide the ability to “undo” uncommitted transactions. While this functionality is a key component to the functionality of the database, as of Oracle 9i , we can put this undo data to an additional use with Flashback Query and Flashback Table. Before defining each of these Flashback technologies and subsequently diving into details about each, let’s talk briefly about undo management in the Oracle Database, because this knowledge is the basis of making undo-based Flashback Technologies work in your environment.
