APPENDIX
B
Adding and Removing Cluster Nodes

Oracle RAC is a highly scalable solution that allows users to add/remove nodes on demand in the existing cluster without affecting the availability of the active database services. Whereas Oracle RAC 10g extended the capacity to add and remove the nodes online, Oracle RAC 11g Release 2 has introduced new features such as RACONE node, which can be transparently converted to an Oracle RAC database. Nodes should be homogeneous and should have the same computing capacity. Though adding a node with higher or lower capacity than the members is technically possible, it is usually not recommended because it creates a logical imbalance between the nodes.

Adding a Node

Adding a node to an existing cluster is similar to installing the Oracle RAC environment. You must complete all prerequisites explained in the installation chapters of this book. There are mainly two different ways to add a new node into the existing cluster—either clone an existing grid home or use the addNode.sh script. You can clone an existing grid home either by executing the clone.pl script manually or using Oracle Enterprise Manager. Oracle Enterprise Manager provides a graphical user interface to clone an existing grid home but underneath uses the clone.pl script. Though you can add another node via cloning, most users use the addNode.sh script. We will also use the addNode.sh script to explain the procedure to add a new node to th....
