EA Assessment Tools

The U.S. government has two types of assessment tools related to EA. One is the EA Management Maturity Framework (EAMMF) from the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The other is the EA Assessment Framework (EAAF) from OMB. The EAMMF is designed for use by organizations to assess the management maturity of their EA processes. The EAAF is a reporting tool required for use by all federal agencies. Each of these assessment tools is reviewed briefly in the following subsections.

EAMMF

The governmental mandates such as the Clinger-Cohen Act and follow-up legislation triggered the development of mechanisms to measure the quality of agency enterprise architectures. This led the Office of Management and Budget to develop a maturity framework that involves a rating scale from red to green. This involved a tool for ranking utilized by the GAO and known by its acronym, EAMMF. This framework proffers a method for measuring progress toward the development of an acceptable EA within an agency and ways to take effective corrective action.
