Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Enterprise architecture is a vast subject that has come to incorporate elements from a variety of established practices—from systems engineering to project management, from strategic planning to operations and maintenance. The focus of enterprise architecture has always been holistically on the enterprise. The usefulness of architecture is in breaking down the complex animal we call the enterprise into components and putting them back together in context.

Boiling the ocean can be a frustrating exercise. This book takes a divide-and-conquer approach to the challenge of understanding enterprise architecting.

Part I establishes some of the core concepts needed by the practitioner. The Federated Enterprise Architecture Certification (FEAC) teaching curriculum is based on understanding these concepts as well as the relationships between them.
