14 Back Up Precious Files > Make Sure Safeguards Are in Place

Make Sure Safeguards Are in Place

This entire chapter is dedicated to backing up your data. However, the best backup is one you never have to use. Before you start backing up anything, then, read and put in place the safeguards listed next. You can help prevent ever having to use your backups by keeping the following in mind and in place.

• Secure your computer and/or your home. Kensington makes computer locks to secure any computer to any desk.

• Don’t leave a laptop on a car seat for a thief or the heat or cold to get to it, and if you must leave it in your car, lock your doors and put the computer in the trunk of the car.

• Secure your computers with passwords, and pick strong passwords that contain letters, numbers, and symbols. If your computer is stolen, you can safely use your backups on your new, replacement PC without fearing your data has been compromised.
