Organize Your File System

Degunking Checklist:

Image Organize the default folders by creating additional, embedded, subfolders

Image Rename, copy, move, or delete folders

Image Create folders on external drives, network drives, or partitions

Image Use libraries effectively by adding folders to a library, creating new libraries, sharing a library, and adding shortcuts to libraries

Image Use the Public folders effectively

Image Configure Public Sharing

Image Share a personal folder, new folder, drive, or other item

Image Run Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, and finalize this part of the degunking process

Now that you’ve deleted unnecessary files, programs, and software and hardware gunk, it’s time to organize what you have remaining on your hard drive. Compare this to our housecleaning analogy, and this part of degunking is like cleaning out the garage: You need easy access to all of the stuff you have stored there, even the stuff you don’t use very often (like holiday decorations and the fertilizer spreader). And, while you want quick access to items when you do need them, you don’t want to trip over them when you don’t. Those items should not impede your ability to regularly get to the mower or to your car, for instance. Organizing your possessions for both long-term storage and quick access can be a difficult task.
