STEP 2: TELL THE STORY

As you read Colony’s story, the foundation of his brand becomes clear early in his life. These childhood events shaped who he has become. Now it’s time for you to take the next step; to examine your stories in greater depth. Choose one story, and determine what that experience is telling you about your values.

Once you’ve chosen one of the stories, find a friend, and ask that person to listen to your story and ask you questions. I strongly recommend that you get a digital recorder so you have a record of the conversation. Tell him or her the story. If you don’t have a coach or friend to help you, record the story, and play it back. I urge you not to sit at your computer and write; tell your story out loud. Why? Most people do not find it possible to capture all that is important in a story when they are writing. They edit as they go and leave out important details that only emerge while writing “out loud.” I have worked with leaders for years and found that “writing out loud” is the secret to capturing those details that will lead you to the truth of the story. I’ve provided 20 questions in the inset box to prompt those insights. Ask yourself these questions, or have your partner ask them.
