Q&A Self Test

Up to this point, you’ve learned how data networks work and the fundamentals of telephony networks. Now it’s time to start making the components play together. In order to accomplish this task, you must understand the hardware components that act as the interface between the data networks that carry voice as data and the telephone networks that carry voice as traditional telephony signals. This difference means you’ll need to learn about gateways and gatekeepers, both of which are covered in this chapter.

In earlier chapters, you learned about voice encoding, where the telephone converts sound waves into electrical signals. In this chapter, you will learn about specific encoding and decoding protocols that are used in Voice over IP networks. Specifically, you will learn about H.323 and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), which build the IP telephony framework and G.7xx coders. In addition, you’ll learn about traffic shaping concepts and the different messaging and collaboration applications that are used on converged networks. It’s clear that this chapter will present a broad array of information, and I will begin by discussing how the voice network will overlay the data network that is traditionally implemented. I’ll also explain a few addi....
