There are exceptions, but in the crisis scenarios I generally describe in this book, the typical catalyst is that something goes wrong or somebody does something wrong, and your crisis response is about addressing and managing that situation. But there are other crises that can arise in which there’s no clear evidence you’ve done anything wrong, or what you’ve done or are doing is simply a subject of controversy and not “wrong-doing.” These sorts of crises can arise when you are “targeted” by a group or individual.
In today’s world, three of the main groups such challenges can come from are:
1. The media
2. Activists and bloggers devoted to a cause
3. Governmental agencies or officials
