ORM Terms

Before we talk about how crisis managers should deal with I-Reporters and other Internet threats to reputation, it’s important to define some basic ORM terminology. This is important because the Internet has in many ways created its own language that crisis managers must understand if they are to mount an effective online defense of their organization.

Website. A set of interconnected Web pages, usually including a homepage, generally all located on the same server, and prepared and maintained as a collection of information by a company, organization, or person (e.g., bernsteincrisismanagement.com). Websites can be yours, your opponents’, or a third party’s.

 


DON’T IGNORE BLOGGERS

Bloggers are nothing more than individuals voicing their personal opinions, right? Wrong. Today, many are operating as full-fledged journalists (Note: Blog means online journal) and are followed by loyal reading publics. And research shows that the majority of traditional reporters and news editors now read blogs for story tips and background for their own stories. So don’t ignore bloggers. Follow those who follow your industry, company, or organization, so that you’ll know if they mention you, and can be prepared before a reporter calls to follow up on what they’ve posted.
