Case Study II Spotlight on Product Manag... > WHY OUR PRODUCT MANAGERS PERFORM WEL...

WHY OUR PRODUCT MANAGERS PERFORM WELL

Our product managers are well-educated and trained; they possess highly sophisticated capabilities that help them evaluate many different indicators and leverage key processes. There is also a high degree of technical expertise required because transactions are processed through national and international payment and financial systems. In order to help the bank manage risk, there are many aspects to keep in front of, such as the myriad complex regulatory and compliance guidelines to which transactions must conform. These finely tuned business and analytical skills are vital for planning strategies and making optimal business decisions.

Another dimension of the role of product manager is how they influence behaviors within the channels. As many may know, in a bank, “shelf space” is limited, so there is little room for slow-moving products. At TD Canada Trust, we subscribe to the “easy principle.” In other words, “simple” sells. Product managers have the responsibility to make sure their products are easy to understand, easy to sell, and easy to use. To enable this level of simplicity, product managers are expected to be the bank’s experts about customers who use their products. They accomplish this through their analysis of research and branch visits. They also work with people in the back office and call centers, and they frequently engage Sales and Marketing people.
