3 Rules and Calculations > Understanding the Subcube

Understanding the Subcube

What is the subcube? A subcube is a unit of data based on the point of view. The 12 dimensions in HFM can be grouped into page dimensions and subcube dimensions. The subcube dimensions are Account, ICP, Custom 1–4, View, and Period. Page dimensions define the data in the subcube; they are Scenario, Year, Entity, and the Value triplet (Currency, Adjustment, and Total).

A data unit is a subset of the subcube. A subcube will contain all periods within a year and Scenario, and the entire triplet of the value dimension. The data unit will only contain the current value member and period.

As you will see as we dive into the rules and functions of HFM, it is important to know which cubes you are updating, and what your point of view in the application is. These page dimensions will help you define scope, improve performance, and help you build efficient and well-performing calculations.
