Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) is a full-featured data integration platform, whereas FDM is a packaged tool. ODI is made for infrastructure people. To that end, ODI covers all data integration requirements: from high-volume, high-performance batch loads, to event-driven, trickle-feed integration processes, to SOA-enabled data services. ODI is a much more technical tool, and not something typical end users would interact with. ODI works best with centralized data. Figure 5-2 shows the main desktop of Oracle Data Integrator.

ODI is used to move and transform information across the information system. ODI, like HAL, is a development platform for integration processes. ODI is a real ETL tool. It uses a process that leverages existing systems. This is why ODI needs the set of adapters to integrate with the system. You use different Oracle Data Integrator graphical user interfaces to access the repositories. Security and Topology are used for administering the infrastructure, Designer is used for reverse-engineering metadata and developing projects, and Operator is used for scheduling and operating run-time operations.
